James "Jay" Reeves has served on the City's Historic Preservation Board at various times for a cumulative total of over 25 years. He obtained his Master of Architecture from the University of Florida, with a specialization in Historic Preservation. He is a registered architect with over 30 years of experience, and specializes in HABS documentation, State of Florida preservation grants, and Federal Tax Credit projects. Mr. Reeves has a particular interest in wood and masonry structures from the 1850s through the 1950s and urban redevelopment. He has been responsible for numerous historic building restorations or rehabilitations in the City of Gainesville, including the Matheson Center, Magnolia Plantation Bed and Breakfast, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, U.S. Senator William Hill House, Historic Haile Plantation, Camillia Rose Bed and Breakfast, the Cotton Club, and the First Methodist Church Sanctuary and Campus Renovation. Projects outside of Gainesville include Jacksonville's 1903 Fire Station, Madison's Historic Jail, the 1912 Newberry Red School Building, and The St. Clair Whitman House in Cedar Key. His many honors and awards include an AIA Design Award for Jacksonville's Trade Port Clock Tower, and Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Awards in 2013 and 2018. Mr. Reeves is a past president of Historic Gainesville Inc, an 8-year Board Member of the Matheson Center Museum, a 10-year Board Member of Historic Haile Homestead, and a 5-year Board Member of Gainesville Modern.
